IIT Kanpur Written Exam and Interview Experience

I am posting my views on IIT Kanpur written exam and interview. Some of the facts you need to know before written exam and interview.

  • IIT Kanpur generally calls students till Rank 500 or less.  So it is very good chance to get IIT for students who have rank more then 350.
  • The best thing is nobody compares you with higher GATE rank student. Every student either he got 100 rank or 500 is same. Your selection depends on your performance in written exam and interview.
  • Come early for your written. You need a good sleep before the exam.
  • Use your time in preparing. Form group and discuss with friends. Try to solve some questions while traveling in train.

Written Exam
During my time (for admission in 2013) approximate 400-500 students called for interview. Students from GATE 2012 got benefit because there GATE score is higher then 2013.
In 2013 written exam consists of 40 questions and we have to solve them in 2 hrs-2:30 hrs.
In my time there are less questions from Maths but don't expect the same thing. Pattern changes every time.
I am giving some facts which is best of my knowledge.

  • There was 40 questions each of 3 marks. Total was 120 marks.
  • Topper of that exam got 78/120. If you score high in written, your chances for selection are good.
  • For General students they selected students who had marks in the range 55-78.
  • For OBC > 48.
  • For ST/SC nearly 30-40.

All the questions in the exam are logical. The best strategy is do half of the questions correctly. Cross check them. Then do more questions.
You can expect questions from each domain. ( Maths, Graph Theory, DSA, OS, TOC and CO were more preferable in 2013.)

Interview
I am giving some general idea for the interview. Nearly 100-120 students selected for interview. Out of them approx 70 selected for admission. At the time of my interview two professor were there. In written exam there was a column where we had to fill our preferred subjects for interview and thesis. I have written Algorithms and Theory of computation.
My interview started with TOC. First they asked definition of turing machine. Then they asked each possible question including two way TM, Markers in TM, Why turing machine invented, Proof for it's existence, How can we say it will valid in future etc.
Then other professor asked me questions about graph theory like representation of graphs, which way is best and why, shortest path, maximum flow related problem etc.
My interview was good. So i was hoping for selection. After interview result was out in 3 days and I got selected.

During interview generally some professor helps you or some may put more pressure on you. Don't panic. Keep yourself calm. Try to answer your best. Think for some time then give your answer. If you don't know the answer clearly say no. Don't think that you can fool them. Professors in IITK are PHDs from primer institutes of the world. They know nearly everything.
After finishing your interview take some rest and start preparing for your next interview. Because nobody ensure your success till result is out.

Hope this post may be helpful for all those who are preparing for IITK. Best of luck :)
